Pitching vs. Batting - Jenn

Another night of decent pitching went to waste as the Boston bats were nowhere to be found.

Wakefield was in much better form Thursday night as he went seven innings and gave up only six hits. Unfortunately three of them turned into runs and included a solo shot from Alex Rios over the green monster. Incidentally, that would be Rios' second trip across the plate, as the first came in the third inning to get the Rays on the board.

So, while the Rays were walking and hitting and scoring our bats remained quiet. The Sox did manage to get wood on the ball four times thanks to Lowell, Crisp, and Big Papi. Unfortunately only one of those hits was for extra bases and all four were in separate innings. Needless to say not one turned into a run. And just like Dad, I'm starting to get concerned.

Why is it that when our bats are working, our pitching stinks and when our pitchers are getting 9 or 13 K's our bats are on vacation? Does anyone have an explanation for this? Can anyone provide insight? Dad, do you have any idea? Maybe the hitting and the pitching coach need to have a meeting and get on the same page. Something needs to happen. Soon. Because with everything that's happened over the month of April from injuries to the flu to playing 20 games in a row, it's a miracle we're tied for first.

But then again it has only been a month. There are five more (six if you count the post season) before baseball ends. Maybe with the injuries lightening up (eventually?) and some days off scheduled in the near future our bats and our pitching will find some common ground and start working together rather than separately. One can only hope. And after 30 years of Fenway fandom, hope has become second nature.
