A Game of Inches--and It Hurts!--by Peter

Sorry for the delay--been away on biz for a couple of days. But, returning to the Sunday game, Beckett was pitching and I had some hope. For a few innings, all was OK. Yes, Wells (a perennial Sox thorn) had brought in two on a round-tripper, but Tek had tied it up at a deuced apiece, so all was reasonably OK. Then, Becket ran out of gas, largely, in my opinion, due to the effects of the reduced work load in the spring, and loaded the bases. In comes 'the other Manny', Delcarmen, and in a moment everything changes. Baseball has been called ' A Game of Inches' for longer than I've been alive, and in this case it really Hurt--as in Big Hurt, Frank Thomas. As I mentioned in my last post, Thomas isn't known as The Big Hurt for nothing. You give him a chance and he'll hurt you--BAD. So it was Sunday.
Delcarmen threw a heater in that clocked 96 on the gun and Thomas deposited it in the seats. An inch or two away from where it arrived at the plate and it probably would have been an easy fly ball, or possibly even a swinging strike, but this wasn't a couple of inches away. It was right where Thomas was sitting and, as it turned out, game over.

The concerns from this fan still seem to be concentrated in two areas: hitting--most of the regulars aren't; and middle relief--it's no relief at all. I know it's still early, bu these games still count on the whole season, and if we're one game out at season's end, God forbid, any of these losses could have been the margin.
Hopefully, today things will pick up. Tigers in town. Here's another team with big pre-season expectations who's underperforming. They're already 0-6 after spending a huge amount of cash off season to bolster their club. Hopefully, the Diceman will continue his stuff from last game and hold them off yet another game. We need some momentum going to the weekend with the pinstripers.
