"Casey' Never Even Got to Bat--by Peter

Just when you thought the Sox were finally beginning to come around after yesterday's gem by Dice-K, reality returned. Lester was doing fine with a 2 zip lead entering the 4th and then someone named Thames (isn't that supposed to be a river in England) got ahold of one of Lester's pitches and the lead was washed away. Actually, it had already been washed away a couple of batters earlier when Edgar Renteria (remember him?) doubled in two runs to tie the score. Thames merely doubled up the score and the Sox never recovered. Every time the Hub Hose would seem about to mount some form of rally, the Detroit hurlers would cut it off.

If that weren't disheartening enough, after Aardsma had turned in a good showing for once, his successor, Corey arrived on the scene, and any real chance the Sox had of catching up left along with him. Unfortunately, he didn't leave earlier--maybe the two runs he surrendered in 1/3 of an inning might have been avoided. Just to be certain, Lopez came on in the 9th and gave up a center field homer for the final nail in the coffin.

However, lest you think our heroes didn't make it interesting, in the bottom half of the 9th, the Sox loaded the bases with 2 outs and Youk at the plate. On deck--who else--Papi--our version of Mighty Casey waiting his turn with the stick. It all looked possible again. Youk would start it off. Any kind of a hit would get at least two runs home; Papi would step up and finish the job and we'd be tied. Manny could then echo that finish and the Sox would once again be victorious. Only problem--never happened. Papi never got out of the on-deck circle. Youk grounded out to end the game.
On the good side, Oakland beat Toronto for the second night in a row, and Kansas City (do you believe they're 6-2?!) did away with the Yankees for the second straight night. Tomorrow's another day, and, hopefully, they'll turn it around again. After all, Friday's the night the Yankees arrive in town.
